Survivor: GenCon 2007 Postmortem

Hi everyone!

Hopefully, you've all had a chance to recover from your time on the island. (I think the afterparty may have required more recovery than the island, for some of us.)

Your production team has created a gallery of some of the pictures taken during the event at this link:

Survivor: GenCon 2007 Album

If that link doesn't work for some reason, or takes you to photos that are not from Survivor: GenCon, you can also access it by going to the Gallery main site and then scrolling down to the "Misc. Photos" section to find the Survivor: GenCon 2007 album.

Right now, it's just some photos taken with the cameraphones, but I'll gradually be adding pictures from my digital camera as well. If you have pictures you'd like to share, feel free to e-mail them to me at survivorgencon at tsukata dot org. That address reaches me, and I can forward things to Dave as well, if you'd like to reach him.

If you have any comments on any aspect of the game, please feel free to post them here or to e-mail us if you'd rather not make your thoughts public. In particular, let us know what your favorite challenges were (or weren't), whether or not food/water gathering was worthwhile, and what thematic elements (e.g., music, buffs, tribe flags) you'd like to see added or removed. This will help us refine the event for any future instances. :)

From Your Producer,
JC/TsuKata

open Q & A thread

We're just a bit over a month away from GenCon Indy at this point. The GenCon registration system shows that 15 players have pre-registered so far. That's plenty for an exciting game, and there are three slots available (for a total of 18) if there are walk-ins who want in using generic tickets.

If you have any questions about the game, feel free to post them here or in our 'shameless plug' thread in the the GenCon community forums.

Event FAQ

This post will be edited/updated with new questions & answers. Reply to this post if you have a question that you'd like to see answered.

(Most recent update - Tuesday May 15 2007 by Dave)

Will I really be playing for eight hours?

It depends on how you do. On the TV show, once you're voted out, you're sent to a "losers' lodge." For this, however, we aren't going to confine you to a lush resort once you're voted out. When/if you're voted out, you are welcome to stay and observe the game as it proceeds or go play other games at the convention, as you prefer. You may be asked to come back for the final vote as a jury member, but other than that, once you're voted out, your time is likely to be your own.

Why does this event cost $15?

Some of the cost goes to GenCon as a mandatory event fee. The majority of the cost is funding the materials for challenges and the prizes. The exact amounts and distribution of the prizes will be determined by the number of entrants, but we guarantee that there will be prizes greater in value than the event cost for the top 20% of finishers at least.

Do I need to prepare a character since it's a LARP/RPG?

Nope. This is classified as a LARP mainly because it's live-action and participatory, which distinguishes it from board games, tabletop RPGs, and so forth. While you are more than welcome to adopt a persona for the game if that amuses you, we expect players to generally play as themselves. There won't be any stats assigned, and we aren't using any RPG system. The game is completely based on and inspired by the TV show. The only role-playing involved is to pretend that you're on the show, and it is not necessary for you to assume any role other than yourself-as-contestant.

Will I be filmed or photographed?

We have no plans to film or photograph the event. Players may bring cameras if they wish.

What about food?

Since the event is Survivor-compressed-into-one-day-at-the-con, starvation is one part of the show that we would rather not include in our simulation. However, please be aware that you're largely on your own with regard to food, mainly because the convention center's policies on bringing in food from outside limits our ability as event sponsors to use food items as a reward. (We may have more wiggle room on this point if we're given playspace in the hotels rather than the convention center proper, but since the rooms aren't assigned yet, this remains to be determined.) On the plus side, this pretty much protects you from Gross Food challenges.

So, if you're worried about getting hungry, buy or bring a snack and eat it whenever time allows. (If you'd rather stay hungry for the duration of the game just to feel more 'in the moment' as a castaway, that's entirely up to you.)

I have an allergy, medical condition, medication, etc. that requires special handling. Can I still play?

Definitely. Just come a few minutes early and let us know. We'll work around any issues to the best of our ability.

Will there be both reward and immunity challenges?

This depends in part on the total number of players. Given the compressed timeframe and the need to do a certain number of eliminations in the time available, most of the challenges will either be for tribal immunity or individual immunity. If the number of total players is small, there may be one or two reward challenges added to the mix to balance out the timing.

In the event of a tie at Tribal Council, what method of tiebreak will be employed?

If there is a tie for most votes at Tribal Council, there will be a single opportunity to re-vote, with only the tied parties as potential targets. If the re-vote also results in a tie, the tied parties will then be asked to participate in a quick mini-challenge of some sort to determine who stays and who goes. (In other words, the Purple Rock of Doom will not be used.)
